Mahahual is the fastest growing area in the Costa Maya area just south of Tulum and the Biosphere. It is currently four hours from the Cancun airport by car, or a quick small plane hop of 1 hour. A new international airport has is under construction just south of Tulum, which when finished will shorten the drive by 2 hours.

Mahahual is continuing an entire renovation following Hurricane Dean in 2007. A pedestrian mall now follows the public beach, lined with shops, beach bars, and restaurants The town grid starts on the other side of the mall.
